Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a typical therapy session?

Most sessions are 45-50 minutes. Occasionally a session may be longer and charged at a higher rate, but this should be discussed and planned ahead of time.

How often should I attend therapy?

I typically recommend starting with weekly sessions if possible. After 1-2 months we will check in and adjust the frequency based on your needs.

Why might I want to consider self-pay vs insurance coverage for sessions?

Insurance may cover some of the costs of therapy which can be very helpful! However, sometimes it adds other restrictions as well. Your insurance company will require a mental health diagnosis that meets their criteria, and that diagnosis stays on your permanent medical record.

Private pay ensures greater confidentiality because no one has access to your mental health records unless you sign a release of information or share those medical records with an outside party.

What can I expect in the first session?

The first session is the initial intake. For adults, I will spend the session learning briefly about what brings you to therapy, some of your history, recent experiences, and goals.

For child clients, the first session is with only you the parents to discuss why you are seeking therapy for your child, their history, recent experiences, and overall goals.

How long does therapy typically last?

Therapy is rarely a fast process and length of therapy varies for every person. We will decide together when you feel ready to end treatment and check in often about progress and needs.

What is your cancellation policy?

All appointments must be cancelled or rescheduled more than 24 hours before the scheduled time or the full fee is charged for that session.

If you are using insurance to cover the cost of sessions, keep in mind that you will still be expected to cover the cost of the cancellation fee as insurance will not cover it.
